Jean Luc Colombo

Jean-Luc and his wife Anne bought their first vineyard - Les Ruchets (the bee-hives) in Cornas, in the heart of the Rhône Valley - in the early 1980s and celebrated their first vintage in 1987. They are renowned for their great wines from the northern and southern Rhône and the Mediterranean region, and export to over fifty countries.

Jean-Luc has great respect for nature, including a sustainable approach to vineyard management and winemaking - key to Colombo’s ‘green’ philosophy. His love of nature is apparent on any visit to his vineyards and he is a great believer in insects, animals and grapes co- existing naturally, allowing all to flourish. This can only be accomplished with sustainable vineyard practices where no harsh pesticides are used. Honey bees through pollination play a vital role in our food chain and Jean-Luc considers the dwindling population to be one of the biggest threats to nature. In recognition of this, Jean-Luc named some of the Côtes du Rhône wines ‘Les Abeilles’ (the bees).

It is a well known fact that in many places around the world bee colonies are in jeopardy, and this is the case in the UK too. As part of his continued support for the honey bee, Jean-Luc Colombo has become a corporate supporter of the BBKA. In addition to a fixed donation, a contribution of £0.10 per bottle will be made to the BBKA – our aim being to raise in excess of £5,000 per year for the BBKA to aid research and education.

Les Abeilles Blanc is a fresh, dry white wine made from 80% Clairette and 20% Roussanne grapes. It has a floral, citrus aroma with hints of minerality which carry through to an easy drinking white wine which is balanced, fresh and lively.  Jean-Luc loves to match this to sushi or ceviche.

Les Abeilles Rouge is a fruit-driven blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre: classic Rhône grape varieties. Seductive, rounded and supple it also shows bright, red fruit, spice and liquorice characters. A great wine to pair with grilled or BBQ lamb or pork - particular favourites for Jean-Luc’s BBQ.
