Nessuit 2009 update

Back in October 2006 we accompanied Pam Gregory on a visit to take over the running of this project and had the privilege of officially opening the headquarters building within the compound which also has hives for training purposes.

Encouragement has been given to the group to start a tree nursery mainly for bushes and trees that produce nectar and pollen as well as a fruit source.

The project stalled for a while due to the political unrest following the disputed national elections but prospects have much improved recently and we have been fortunate in gaining the assistance of an experienced Kenyan beekeeping trainer, David Njunga, who has raised the profile of beekeeping and has run group training, including two workshops specifically for the women.

The motorbike assists him to undertake "on farm training visits". Encouragingly for him he has been mentoring a young man who potentially will be a lead person in the future. A new committee has recently been elected with a wise choice as a woman as treasurer.

We are pleased to report good news following a visit in Feb 2009. There are now 70 families involved with beekeeping, with honey being produced and harvested. This has led to planning being made to group market hive products under the Nessuit label in the nearby town.
