Beekeeping Courses
"So You Think You Would Like To Become a Beekeeper" - an Introductory evening for potential beekeepers will be held on Thursday 15th September 2011 at Slaithwaite Methodist Mission, Carr Lane, Slaithwaite. Beginner Beekeeping Courses scheduled for 2011 / 2012 - Commencing 5th October 2011.
The course will run over 7 evenings, on the 1st Wednesday in the month through the winter starting on Wednesday 5th October.
This course will take you through all you need to know to start off with a nucleus colony of bees and work them up to a full colony by the end of your first year. It will be followed by 2 practical sessions in the apiary of one of the tutors. It may be possible to buy a nucleus of bees at the end of the course depending on availability.
Sessions will cover:
- The colony, its organisation, life cycles and development.
- The bees’ nest, hive components and uses of equipment
- Beekeeping Year, management through each season.
- Swarming, understanding the process and methods of control
- Pests and diseases, of brood and adult bees including statuatory requirements
- Bees, plants and hive products including requirements for selling honey
- Getting started, sources of equipment and clothing, setting up your apiary, getting your bees, local association, BBKA membership.
