Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead Beekeepers' Society

Getting Started

Hive

Are you interested in keeping bees?

Would you like to find out more about this fascinating hobby?

The BBKA website has some helpful guidance on Starting Beekeeping, as well as a wealth of other information about honey bees.

We recommend that if you are new to beekeeping, you should take an introductory evening course, such as the one held at the Berkshire Agricultural College www.bca.ac.uk at Burchetts Green. This gets booked up very quickly, so call 01628 824 444 if you wish to book a place. An alternative is Blackhorse Apiaries www.blackhorseapiaries.org.uk at Woking (tel: 01493 475259), which also runs courses.

We also run annual 2 day introductions to bee-keeping within our own Society (for details of any courses due, see the Meetings page of this website).  Our own apiary is also open to provide practical experience to members on weekends throughout the spring and summer season.  This is a wonderful opportunity to see experienced bee-keepers in action and to learn how to handle bees yourself.

We also suggest you obtain a copy of Bees and Honey by Ted Hooper.

If you would like to come along to any of our meetings as a  guest, to meet us and see if you would like to join us, please contact our Chairman or Secretary (see Contacts), who will arrange for someone to look out for you at the next meeting and introduce you to other members.
