Beekeepers along the South Coast are being encouraged to put out traps to catch Asian Hornet queens in spring. This can be a cheap and effective way of monitoring for the arrival of the Asian Hornet into the UK. Last year the insect was reported in Normandy and if any Asian Hornet queens are caught they should be reported immediately using the link in the factsheet.
Our local beekeepers recognise that for practical reasons beekeeping is not an option for everyone so they are supporting the British Beekeepers’ Association new Adopt a Beehive scheme which makes it possible for more people in West Sussex to become `armchair’ beekeepers and support the honey bee.
