  • Where to obtain hives and equipment

  • Where to keep bees
  • Obtaining honey

Your tutors, David Buckley and Dr William Kirk, are experienced beekeepers. They have considerable knowledge of the craft and have been successful at introducing and coaching newcomers to this rewarding pastime.

The course is run by the North Staffordshire Beekeepers Association (Charity No 511576) and will take place at Keele University in the Huxley Building of the School of Life Sciences.

The course will not include any handling of bees or contact with live bees. However, opportunities to handle bees at a later date may be offered by local beekeeping associations to those attending the course.

The number of people on the course will be limited, so early registration is strongly recommended to be sure of a place. The running of the course is subject to minimum numbers.

This is a technical course aimed at those who are interested in learning about beekeeping with a view to taking it up as a serious hobby.  It is not intended for those with a more casual interest.

The course is run by members of the Blagdon, Clevedon & District branch of Avon Beekeepers Association. It will teach the basic concepts of beekeeping to those wishing to start on this important and fascinating craft. As such it will follow the Introduction to Beekeeping syllabus set by the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA).  The course includes a practical lesson in constructing hive frames. You will also receive a copy of the new book that accompanies this course, co-written by Dr Ivor Davis, NDB.  

At the end of this theoretical course there will be an opportunity to visit an apiary for some ‘hands-on’ experience and to meet with experienced beekeepers. You will be encouraged to join a branch local to you so that help is at hand when you begin to set up your own colony of honey bees. If you then join the BCD branch weekly sessions at our teaching apiary will be made available to you in your 1st year, and a designated mentor will be appointed for your 2nd year.

Keith Delaplane, Professor of Entomology at Georgia University in the USA, has kindly agreed to give us a special talk. Professor Delaplane is currently on a six-month sabbatical in the UK where he is working with the NBU in York. His lecture will be based on his super-organism research and will be at a level that will appeal to all abilities of beekeeper.

On this singular occasion, BCD Branch is opening the lecture to all beekeepers who wish to attend. The lecture will be held on Friday 28 September at Shipham Village Hall. The cost will be only £6 per person.  Starting at 7.15 pm this charge includes a welcoming glass of wine, tea, coffee or soft drink and nibbles.  The lecture itself will commence at 8 o’c sharp and will be followed afterwards by a Q & A session with Professor Delaplane.

A Beginners Course in Beekeeping  hosted by Hagley & Stourbridge Branch

A Beginners Course in Beekeeping will commence at 7.00pm on Thursday 31 January in the Meeting Room at Hagley Community Centre, Worcester Road, Hagley, Stourbridge DY9 0NW.

Lasting 2 hours the course covers eight sessions after which candidates can attend ten practical sessions at the Branch Apiary commencing on Sunday 7 April 2.30am and every ten days afterwards.  Should candidates wish to keep bees they will be assigned a mentor, an experienced beekeeper who lives locally who can guide them and offer practical advice in their first beekeeping year.

The course is open for only 20 candidates, however the course will be repeated on the following Saturday at 10.00am for a further 20 candidates.  Booking are being taken now with payment in full; if the candidate starts but doesn’t complete the Beginners Course then payments are non-refundable, regrettably candidates cannot mix and match days.  The course fee is £10 per session.  The course dates are:

This is a free event for both beekeepers and the public. There will be stalls so that the public can meet their local beekeeper and buy a jar or two of honey. The public will also be invited to taste a wide selection of the capital’s honey and vote for your favourite local honey, with prizes for the winning beekeeper.

The event is open to all beekeepers and associations within the greater London area. Stalls are available, free of charge, with a suggested donation for those that are selling honey. You can enter the honey tasting event on its own by emailing mikey@sustainweb.org.

The four hour festival will also feature children’s activities, film shows and bee themed music. There will be demonstrations of honey extractions, beekeeping equipment, educational stalls, honey massages, and an observation hive.

The Centre for Pharmaceutical Engineering Science, based at the University of Bradford is proud to announce we will be holding two events as part of this prestigious festival on Monday 12 September 2011 focusing on “Health from Honey Bees” – one will be in an exhibition format and the other an event format. These ‘Study Group’ events aim to help trainers learn and develop teaching methods specifically designed for working with small groups.

Based on a ‘Study Group’ model we explore how these can be made to work really effectively through the use of a wide range of resources ranging from recommended texts through internet based work-groups to problem based learning techniques.

Anybody who has achieved a pass in modules 1 and 2 are invited to attend - it is you who we hope will become the lead facilitators and trainers where you live. You don’t have to be an expert in everything because you can always engage the help of external experts – You do need to be willing to encourage and energise others in your area. This training aims to help you have the knowledge and skills to facilitate groups learning, not to teach the group.

The strong growth in Spring Convention delegate numbers in recent years has been good news but this growth has brought with it some problems. We have reached the limit of the space available to us in the currently used exhibition areas at Stoneleigh and the situation is even more pressing in the lecture and workshop/seminar facilities.

The Spring Convention Committee has looked at a number of alternative venues and has decided to move the 2012 event to Harper Adams University College, Newport, Shropshire. At Harper Adams we have available high quality lecture facilities, seminar rooms and laboratories.  The on-site Regional Food Academy also enables us to offer some novel new courses to delegates.  Good quality accommodation and catering is available on-site at reasonable prices. Additional accommodation is available off-site in local hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. Access is good from the M6 or M54.This great new venue provides enhanced facilities for the convention’s lectures and workshops.

Celebrate National Honey Week – get this natural food source from your local beekeeper. Honey is a natural food source and is the only one humans eat provided by an insect - the Honey Bee. Interesting honey facts:

Honey bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey.

One bee would therefore have to fly around 90,000 miles - three times around the globe - to make one pound of honey.

The average honey bee will actually make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.

A honey bee can fly as fast as 15 miles per hour.

It takes one ounce of honey to fuel a bee's flight around the world.

A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.

Worker bees are all female.

Flowers have bright markings and strong smells to attract bees and other insects so that they will pollinate flowers. Some also have dark lines called 'honey guides' which scientists believe help insects find their way into the flowers.

A colony of bees consists of tens of thousands of worker bees, one queen and sometimes drones (male bees).

The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

Honey has always been highly regarded as a medicine. It is thought to help everything from sore throats and digestive disorders to skin problems and hay fever.

Honey has antiseptic properties and historically was often used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts.

Honey lasts for ever - or nearly. An explorer who found a 2000 year old jar of honey in an Egyptian tomb said it tasted delicious!

 The natural fruit sugars in honey - fructose and glucose - are very quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost.

The Romans used honey instead of gold to pay their taxes.

Honey bees have been producing honey in the same way for 150 million years.

The bees' buzz is the sound made by their wings which beat 11,400 times per minute.

Bees feed their larvae on pollen or 'cakes' made from pollen and saliva, using honey as a source of food during winter months. As they make more than they need, we humans can share the fruit of their labours.

The term 'beeline' comes from the 'bee line' these clever insects make to the flower of their choice, using the shortest route possible.

When a bee finds a good source of nectar it flies back to the hive and shows its friends where the nectar source is by doing a sort of dance positioning the flower in relation to the sun and the hive. This is known as the 'waggle dance.'

In Ancient Egypt honey had a role in births, deaths and marriages; it provided the energy and inspiration to create a child, was used to make special honey cakes as an offering to placate the gods and was an ingredient in embalming fluids.

Nearly one million tonnes of honey is produced worldwide every year.

Honey's ability to attract and retain moisture means that it has long been used as a beauty treatment. It was part of Cleopatra's daily beauty ritual.

In India , Krishna, as an avatar of Vishnu, has a blue bee in the middle of his forehead. Soma, the moon, is called a bee.

The Greek Great Mother was known as the Queen Bee, and her priestesses were called Mellisae, the Bees.

In Celtic myths, bees possess a secret wisdom garnered from the other world.

In Australia and Africa bees are found as tribal totems.

The BBC Breakfast TV presenter will cut the ribbon across the doorway at 12 noon and will stay on to give a talk about his hobby as a beekeeper at 1pm in the Shire Hall, for which tickets can be purchased from the Bees for Development shop. The bee ambassador, who is a patron of Bees for Development Trust, will also sign copies of his hilarious book The Bad Beekeepers Club (his first book ever, about the ups and downs or beekeeping).

The opening is also being marked by Monmouth’s very first Bee Festival from 12noon to 4pm. This free event will take place in the community room at the Shire Hall and under the loggia, alongside the usual Saturday market. It is being organised jointly with adventa, part of Monmouthshire’s rural development programme, and it also sees the launch of the Green Book of Gardening in Monmouthshire 2013.

It is with grateful thanks we record a donation of £155 from Pierre Cope and Andy Bell via Just Giving. This was from Andy's share of royalties received from online music downloads of their EP Sunsets Pink. Sunsets Pink consists of 5 Demos which was recorded back in the early 80's. It was released online back in March this year under the artist name of Dinger( Pierre Cope and Andy Bell).

The EP can be purchased through Amazonmp3 or Itunes. Pierre's share of the royalties has gone to "The Royal Marsden Trust".

The EP did not get any major publicity or press coverage as it was released independently of any major record labels through an online distribution company, however, the old hard core Erasure fans and some friends did buy it.

Andy and Pierre hope that the money will come to good use for our association.

The BBKA’s £17,600 grant has enabled Keele University to obtain more than £60,000 from the Perry Foundation, to award a four-year post graduate scholarship to former student, Richard Bridgett.

Starting this month, Richard will work together with Dr Falko Drijfhout at Keele University and Dr David Aston, Chair of the BBKA’s Technical and Environmental Committee, to study methods to enhance honey bee health by looking for substances in pollen that stimulate bees to feed. BBKA members will be taking part in the final stages of the project.

The team will launch a full investigation into determining which compounds are responsible for the palatability of pollen to the honey bee, studying compounds from various pollen sources to determine if these compounds are common or specific to a plant species. These natural compounds can then either be isolated, or synthesised, and mixed in with pollen substitutes to increase their palatability.

Dr Aston, said: “One of the major factors responsible for the global decline in honey bees is the nutritional status of the colonies. Poor nutrition affects bees’ resistance to disease.

“In certain parts of the world, it has been established that giving additional pollen to a honey bee colony , often in the form of pollen patties, has improved its strength. It is believed that feeding stimulants, natural compounds within pollen itself, influence honey bee feeding behaviour.

BBKA funding has come from donations raised by its Adopt a Beehive fundraising campaign which gives people who want to help honey bees without having a hive of their own, the opportunity to donate to bee health research and beekeeper education.

Martin Smith, President of the British Beekeepers Association, said: "The BBKA is very pleased that the United Nations Environment Programme's study, Global Bee Colony Disorders and other Threat to Insect Pollinators, recognises the economic importance of managed honey bees and also welcomes its call for stronger government intervention to restore habitats for bees, which make a £153 billion contribution to global food production. "The BBKA  calls on the UK government not only to take action to protect existing habitats but to find the ways and means to create new habitats beneficial to bees and other pollinators. We urge increased planting of wild flower margins around agricultural fields and also stronger guidance to local authorities on increasing flowering trees and wild flower planting in towns and cities."

The BBKA also calls on the public to become honey bee activists by either taking up beekeeping or becoming an Armchair Beekeeper by supporting its fundraising campaign Adopt a Beehive.

An open invitation is made to all interested beekeepers to attend the next meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Science and Technology in Agriculture on the afternoon of Monday 4 April 2011.

Guest speaker Dr Jeff Pettis, Research Leader at the USDA Bee Research Laboratory, will present the findings of his recently published research into agricultural pesticides and bee health. Amid calls for a ban on certain types of insecticides, Dr Pettis‘ work has been widely reported in the British media and debated by MPs in Parliament. This meeting will offer the chance to hear about his research first-hand, as well as his views on how its conclusions have been received and interpreted in the UK.

Dr Pettis‘ presentation will be followed by question and answer panel session – to include farming, crop protection and beekeeper representatives - on the issues raised by his research and the wider factors impacting bee health in agriculture.

BBKA members and other beekeepers are invited to attend what we hope will be a thought-provoking and informative session.

Mrs Ford, a florist, became interested in bees in 2009 and took a recognised BBKA Introductory Course run by her local beekeepers early this year.

 

Mrs Ford, said: “I’d always been fascinated by  honey bees, but concerned about their decline, so having  got an allotment and some chickens, it just seemed natural to go on and  learn about beekeeping.

 

“The local beekeepers have been very welcoming to me and my family – even providing a bee suit for my daughter. Sophie has watched as I learnt the art of handling a hive of 50,000 bees closely guided by my beekeeping mentor.

 

“By July I felt confident  enough to have  a hive on my allotment. It’s so satisfying to watch the bees flying around the allotment, collecting nectar and  pollinating the crops -every site should have some.”

 

David Rea, Chairman of Sidcup Beekeepers said: “Tara has become a ‘model’ beekeeper and you can only do that by learning how to handle bees responsibly before you get your own.”

 

“Our membership matches the steep upward curve across the UK. We have nearly 70 active members – the highest number for 25 years.”

The findings come from the charity’s first countrywide survey of its members’ honey harvests released today, 28th October 2010

The survey found that, on average, each hive produced 32lbs of honey, worth £130* to the beekeeper, whilst the value of pollination provided to the agricultural economy by each hive has been estimated at more than £600. per hive.**

The figures show substantial regional variations of honey yields. The highest yields were in the south east with 10 per cent above average, while the lowest yields were in the north west with 34 per cent below the average. Speaking at the opening of the National Honey Show, Martin Smith, BBKA President, said:

“It is extremely encouraging that our members have produced more than three and a half million*** jars of honey this summer - that’s more than a third of all the nation’s home-produced honey. “We estimate that beekeepers have also increased the number of their bee colonies by 50% - up to 120,000 from 80,000 in March.****

“This summer too 44 per cent of beekeepers kept one or two hives which of course reflects the 40 per cent increase in people taking up beekeeping.” Mr. Smith contintued:

“The test of whether beekeeping in the UK is still improving however will come when we survey the number of hives which survive the coming winter. “But let’s not forget the £200 million contributed by honey bees through pollination and the resulting increased crop productivity.

” The current membership of the BBKA at just under 20,000 shows a near 100 per cent rise in the last three years coinciding with the huge public interest in bees and beekeeping.

The survey showed that while members on average have been keeping bees for just under 10 years, just over 40 per cent of the respondents had taken up the craft in the last 2 years only.

Beekeepers in rural areas tended to have kept bees longer at 10 years, than those in urban areas at five years whilst 42 per cent of rural beekeepers reported increased honey output compared with just 34 per cent in urban areas.

Commenting on the success of the Adopt a Beehive campaign, Martin Smith said: “The public has responded magnificently to the plight of the honey bee by either taking-up beekeeping or by becoming ‘armchair beekeepers’ through the recently launched ‘Adopt a beehive’ fundraising campaign which is providing funding for research and beekeeper education.

“It is not just beekeepers who can help bees to recover, everyone can play their part by continuing to plant bee friendly plants, fruit and vegetables in their window boxes, patio pots, gardens and allotments to provide desperately needed forage."

]]> Wed, 06 Oct 2010 22:59:59 UTC [News] WINTER SURVEY 2009/10 http://www.bbka.org.uk/news_and_events/winter_survey_200910 http://www.bbka.org.uk/news_and_events/winter_survey_200910 The British Beekeepers’ Association announced today, 24 May, the first results from  its 2009-10 winter colony survival survey* which shows that more than 80% of honey bee colonies made it through one of the harshest winters in 30 years.  

The survey also reveals the efforts that beekeepers are making to rebuild bee stocks with the average number of colonies per beekeeper in the survey rising from 3.7 in 2007 to 4.7 in 2009.

The figures* show a national loss of 17.3 per cent but with substantial regional variations.  Highest losses of 26 per cent were recorded in the north of England, and lowest losses of 12.8 per cent were recorded in the south west of England.

The number of hives increasing over the same period rises from an estimated 

40, 000 to more than 80,000, and with the number of honey bees rising from  23 billion to 48 billion.**

Martin Smith, BBKA President, said:“This year’s losses show a small and encouraging  improvement on the 19.2 per cent losses of 2008-09 and are much better than the disastrous 30.1 per cent revealed by the 2007-08 survey.

“It shows that our honey bees are slowly  moving out of intensive care but they are still not healthy  enough. 

“Winter losses between 7 – 10 per cent are acceptable. The current rate is not and neither are the vast regional  differences. Yet there is still no answer to what is causing the losses. Disease, bad weather and poor nutrition due to habitat loss are the prime suspects.  

 “British beekeepers are having to work even harder at this time of year to replace their missing colonies to keep the stream of honey flowing and more vitally  to maintain the ‘pollination army’  on which we depend for so much of our food , and the beauty of our countryside.

“For the welcome increase in the numbers of honey bees to be sustainable further research into the causes of the losses remains critical.”

A beekeeping renaissance has been created by the BBKA’s high profile campaigning for greater investment into honey bee health research, with thousands more people taking up the craft. Membership of BBKA has grown by 20 per cent over the last 12 months from 12,500 to 17,500 reversing the historic decline in the number of beekeepers since the end of World War II. 

This increase in new beekeepers is putting more pressure on the existing beekeepers and their local associations who have historically trained the next generation while honing their own skills, and watching out for possible new exotic pests arriving in the UK too.

Martin Smith continued: “The public has responded magnificently to the plight of the honey bee by either taking-up beekeeping or by becoming ‘armchair beekeepers’ through the recently launched ‘Adopt a beehive’ fundraising campaign which is providing funding for research and beekeeper education.
