By choosing to ‘adopt’ a beehive from one of ten regions across the UK, supporters follow in the life of their beehive and beekeeper through seasonal updates and the members’ newsletter Hive Talk. Supporters also receive a welcome box which includes a jar of pure British honey and a packet of wildflower seed, among other bee-related goodies. Adopt a Beehive continues to raise a small but steady amount of money for the BBKA research funds. Vitally, it also raises awareness of and educates the general public about the importance of the honey bee and the BBKA’s work. The scheme cannot survive without the support of the BBKA membership. We rely on you to tell members of the public about the scheme at local shows and events, and help to give out promotional leaflets. If every member bought just one Adopt pack this year – and it does make a lovely gift - it would more than treble our research fund! If you would like to know more about Adopt a Beehive or would like any promotional materials for your association to use, please contact Sarah Snelson in the BBKA office or visit the Adopt a Beehive section on the new website. Beekeeping families or intergeneration beekeeper partnership wanted! Are you a passionate beekeeper, currently keeping bees in the East, South West or Wales? Do you want to help educate the public about the importance of the honey bee, and the craft of beekeeping? Adopt a Beehive is looking for volunteer BBKA beekeepers to represent their region as part of this popular fundraising scheme. You would need to be willing to share insight and experiences three times a year about your beekeeping activities, including photos. We are especially keen to work with beekeeping families or intergeneration beekeeping partnerships, where children or young people are involved and engaged with bees too. You’ll be joining our current volunteer Adopt a Beehive beekeepers Pat Pegrum in the Wiltshire, Louise Jutsum in Hitchin and Susie and Calwyn in the Usk Valley. Your three updates would be sent by Adopt a Beehive to your supporters in Spring, Summer and Autumn and can cover anything from winter feeding and swarming, to honey spinning and what to plant to help bees. If you’d like to volunteer your time to help with the fundraising scheme, or would just like to find out a bit more about becoming an Adopt a Beehive beekeeper, please call the office on 02476 696679 or email Sarah Snelson [email protected]. Thank you!
