Prof. Steve Martin is well known to BBKA and he has been awarded £9,500 to extend his work on varroa tolerance mechanisms.  He is based in Salford and has collaborators in Brazil and the USA.  The study will last up to two years.

Dr Rinke Vinkenoog and colleagues from Northumbria University has been awarded £7,100 for a project named 'City Slickers versus Country Yokels' which will investigate the foraging habits of colonies located in urban areas and rural areas.  The study will include detailed analysis of the pollens collected and observations of the range of pollinators visiting forage in the area.  The study will last about one year.

Dr Michael Ramsey-Thomas, a student of Dr Martin Bencsik from Nottingham Trent University has been awarded £10,000 for a project looking at the validity of the use of accelerometers placed inside hives to monitor the brood cycle.  Accelerometers measure vibrations and movement in the hive. This is a short term study lasting approximately 6 months and is in collaboration with INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique), in France.

Dr Clint Perry from Queen Mary University of London has been awarded £10,000 to investigate the development of entrance monitor systems at more realistic costs than at present.  QR codes will be used in conjunction with cameras.  This system has many advantages compared with RFID and the work will be in collaboration with colleagues in Norway and Australia.  This study will take about 1.5 to 2 years.
