I enjoyed a full career in the Army serving in the Far East, Germany and the UK including three tours in Ulster.  After leaving the Army I headed up a small association of gap year organisations. At the same time, I was a trustee and chairman of Cranstoun, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation charity.

I completed a Beginners course in 2012 and worked my way steadily through the modules between 2014 and 2019.  Basic Certificate in 2013, General Husbandry in 2018 and Advanced Husbandry in 2021. Master Beekeeper in 2021.

I am an assessor for the Basic and Honey Bee Health Certificates.

I have managed an average of eight colonies over the years with an apiary in my garden and an out apiary. I currently have nine colonies in my apiary at home.

I attended most of the short courses that were run by the NDB and attended the NDB’s long course in 2021 and 2023.

I have attended the Spring Convention and National Honey Show whenever possible. Also, various lecture days run by my own and neighbouring area associations.

I have come to realise that the more I know about beekeeping, the more I realise that I don’t know. This encourages me both to keep on learning and to do all I can to help others become better beekeepers.
